Experienced biological and biomedical research from the bench as a graduate student, a postdoctoral trainee, and research scientist, and directed it as a principal investigator. During the last 15 years of his career, gained experience as a health scientist administrator (Deputy director and Director of the offices of scientific review at two of the NIH centers) to manage biomedical research.
- Eleven years of work as a bench scientist in life science and biomedical research within various academic laboratories & the intramural research program within the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
- Four years in an academic setting (George Washington University; Children’s National Research Institute)
- Published over 60 peer reviewed scientific articles and invited reviews.
- Served as a peer reviewer of scientific publications for a variety of biomedical publications and served on peer review panels by invitation
- Mentored junior colleagues in the intramural research program at the NIH & physician trainees at the Children’s National Research Institute
- Successful at obtaining research grants as a principal investigator from the NIH while serving as a faculty member at the Children’s National Research Institute (Pediatrics, George Washington University).
- More than fifteen years of experience in biomedical research grant review administration at the NIH.
- Served as the head of the scientific review office at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at the NIH for five years
- Possess broad research background along with years of experience and familiarity with professionally dealing and interacting with physician scientists, and basic biomedical and bioengineering scientists in various scientific disciplines.
- Well experienced in various aspects of biomedical research grant and contract review administration at the NIH including hands-on experience with the administration of intramural and extramural research programs at the NIH.
- Familiarity with the organization of research programs within large US research universities obtained through conducting site visits, and by administering the review of institutional infrastructure grants.
- Peer reviewer of scientific articles for publication in journals.
- Served on peer review panels at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Children’s National Research Institute, and the Kidney Foundation.
- Served as the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) representative on the Review Policy Committee (RPC) of the NIH and partnered to draft NIH review policies and implement them within NCATS.
- Nominated to serve on the NIH Review Policy Committee (RPC) Steering Committee.
- As the head of an office, participated in the formation and organization of an entirely new institute/center at the NIH, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at the end of 2011.
- Involved closely with the preparation and publication of NCATS funding opportunity announcements (FOAs), and in administering the review of grants and contracts received in response to such FOAs.
- Received several NCATS and NIH Director’s Awards, for his dedication to the NIH and public service.
